IndyCar is gearing up for the Arlington Grand Prix, and Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren expressed his desire to see a race in Mexico. While negotiations for a Mexican race in 2026 were quite advanced and close to the Arlington event, the deal ultimately fell through. O’Ward emphasized the importance of local promoters showing dedication and commitment to hosting the championship in Mexico, noting a lack of “hunger” as a concern.
He highlighted the need for full commitment from all parties involved and pointed out that the success of the Arlington race should serve as a learning opportunity for potential Mexican races. O’Ward stressed that genuine enthusiasm and a joint effort from everyone, including the track and promoters, are essential for a successful event.
Furthermore, despite his Mexican roots, O’Ward feels a strong connection to Texas, considering it his home away from home due to spending a significant portion of his teenage years in San Antonio. He praised the work done by key figures like Roger Penske, Jerry Jones, and the Texas Rangers in making the Arlington Grand Prix a standout event. The unique challenges of the Arlington layout, with varying surfaces and an aggressive design, have impressed drivers and added to the excitement of the upcoming race.
